Sewer Smoke Testing

Isaac Regional Council carries out routine sewer smoke testing in towns across the region.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) factsheet (PDF, 313KB)

The purpose of the smoke testing is to identify any faulty pipelines, water problems and leaks. The smoke is harmless, non-toxic, non-staining, does not create a fire hazard, and will disappear after a couple of minutes.

Please don't be alarmed if you notice smoke in your street, however if you are in any way unsure of the cause of the smoke, please phone 000 immediately.

If smoke testing is being carried out in your street, Council representatives will notify you one day prior, via letterbox drop and door knocking. If you are notified, please prepare your home for testing by following these steps:

  1. Check that all drain traps (S-bends) under basins, washing facilities and floor drains contain water by simply flushing toilets, running the shower and running or pouring water into all drains.
  2. If there is an individual in your home or business who has respiratory problems or mobility limitations, please call Council on 1300 ISAACS (1300 47 22 27) immediately.

Isaac Regional Council has notified local Queensland Police and Queensland Fire Officers of the smoke testing exercise.

If you have any questions please contact Isaac Regional Council on 1300 ISAACS (1300 47 22 27).
