A campaign in a bid to ask Resources Minister Scott Stewart to save Glenden has launched in the Isaac region today.

The Minister announced his preliminary decision to approve a 450-bed mine camp at the Byerwen coal mining lease last week, giving Isaac Regional Council 14 days to change his mind.

The campaign is calling on the Minister to step in and save Glenden after Council has fought to ensure the future sustainability of the Glenden township continues.

Today Mayor Anne Baker spoke to the community during an update on Council’s support and way forward in making sure Glenden has a future.

“If the Minister approves this camp, it will set a precedent for all Queensland mining and renewable communities,” Mayor Baker said.

“This is about making sure the Minister holds QCoal to the original commitment by housing a workforce within the boundaries of the Glenden township.

“I am urging everyone to get on board with this Save Glenden campaign and help send the Resource Minister a message on behalf of mining communities.

“The residents of Glenden feel let down and scared about what this will mean for their future.”

Mayor Baker said Council has been fighting for Glenden’s future for over a decade and invested significant time and money defending the community over the past four years in court.

“All we want is for the Minister to show that on behalf of the Queensland Government will hold these major companies to account and show genuine commitment to sustainable communities.

“We won’t give up the fight for Glenden, just like we wouldn’t give up on any of our communities.

“To even consider approving this camp flies in the face of the Queensland Resource Industry Development Plan, The Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan, the EIS process, Social Impact Assessments and the principles of the Strong and Sustainable Communities Act.

“It basically says that all the legislation, engagement and plans aren’t worth the paper they are written on.”
