We've heard community concerns about the Goonyella Road Upgrade Project and want to provide an update on the works currently underway.
WHAT HAS HAPPENED SO FAR The Goonyella Road Upgrade Project is now entering its final stages.
The road is not finished yet - several final activities, including additional sealing works, site clean-up, and line marking are still to be completed.
The project is on schedule and is progressing through its planned final stages.
WHAT’S HAPPENING NOW New pavement has been constructed and final resurfacing works are underway.
This work will be done: 5pm to 5am Thursday, 10 September - Saturday, 12 September Please drive carefully during these times.
To save ratepayers money, Council is bringing in a dedicated asphalt contractor for the final resurfacing work.
WHAT'S LEFT TO DO?While most of the work has been completed, the following are still scheduled:
Final asphalt surfacing (10-12 September)
Sealing works to join the existing road with the upgraded section
Removal of loose material and site clean-up
Line marking following the asphalt curing (after 2 October)
WHY AREN'T THE LINES MARKED ON THE ROAD YET?Lines can’t be marked until the new asphalt is cured. Line marking is scheduled to be completed after Friday, 2 October 2026.
WILL COUNCIL CLEAR LOOSE ROCKS AND DEBRIS?Yes. Council will clear any loose material before the lines are marked.
HOW DO TRUCKS SAFELY ACCESS THE DEPOT UNDER THE LOW-HANGING POWERLINES? Council is aware of community concerns regarding powerlines in the area and is working with the relevant utility providers to assess and address these issues where required.
IS THE PROJECT ON TRACK? Minor delays were caused by material quality issues; however the project is still on schedule.
HAS COUNCIL CONSIDERED SAFETY? Safety is our top priority. While the final works are being completed, please remember that the upgraded section is still an active work area.
Please:
Obey all traffic signs and speed restrictions.
Follow directions from traffic controllers.
Drive to conditions and slow down through work zones.
Stay alert to changing road conditions, workers and construction equipment, especially when entering or exiting the upgrade area.
HOW WAS THE PROJECT FUNDED? The total project cost is $5,495,448, funded through:
Australian Government Roads to Recovery Program: $2.5M
Developer contribution: $975K
Council original contribution: $24K
Council additional contribution: $1.75M
