UPDATE #2_Glenden Waste Management Facility

Isaac Regional Council would like to advise the Glenden community that design works on the Glenden Transfer Station are now complete and construction works are expected to commence this month. 

The site will remain open during construction and Council is committed to minimising disruptions during this phase.

Once the works are complete the landfill will cease operating as a landfill and be converted to a waste transfer station. Please see the following frequently asked questions:

What will look different?

  • A split-level transfer bay with two lidded 15 cubic meters skips will be installed near the current site entrance.
  • Minor changes to internal site roads and traffic management.
  • Minor changes to layout of the resource recovery area.

What isn’t changing?

  • No changes to opening times, fees and charges, chargeable and non-chargeable items.
  • Recording of waste transactions, vehicle registration numbers and other information – which has been in place since 2011.

What changes will there be to my experience of visiting the dump?

  • The small skips which have been in use since late 2022 will be replaced with new, lidded skips and become permanent.
  • No vehicles will be able to tip directly in the landfill.
  • No large vehicles will be able to use the site to dispose of landfill waste after 30 June 2024.
  • Only smaller vehicles (cars, vans, utes and small trailers) will be able to use the transfer station.
  • ALL visitors will be required to report to the site staff and advise the type of waste items so that they may be directed to the correct disposal point.
  • You may experience a short delay if other vehicles are using the transfer facility at the same time.

What else do I need to know?

  • Large vehicles will no longer be able to use the Glenden Waste Management Facility.
  • The transfer station installation is in line with section 57(1)(c) of the Waste Reduction & Recycling Act 2011 – with every landfill in Queensland from 1 July 2024.
  • The transfer station will improve safety on the site and remove the need for small vehicles to use the active landfill face. It will:
  • Reduce the risk of injuries to residents from objects in the tip face
  • Remove the risk of being struck by large vehicles
  • Make the site more resilient to wet weather for smaller vehicles
  • Be cleaner to use than the landfill,
  • Shorten the time taken to tip, and
  • Enable Council to collect more accurate waste data
